Somalia: Puntland Suspends Relations With the Federal Government

The President of Somalia's State of Puntland Abdiweli Ali Gaas has said that its region has cut the ties with the Federal Government of Somalia following the intent to create a new administration in the Central Regions of Somalia.

The Federal Government of Somalia on Wednesday declared that it has signed an agreement which suggests the formation of new state for Mudug and Galgadud regions in the central Somalia.

"The announced signing of the agreement to form a new federal state in Mudug and Galgadud regions totally opposes the constitution of the country which clearly states the methodology to establish the Federal Member States," President Abdiweli Ali Gaas said in a press conference in Garowe State House on Thursday evening.

He said the decision to cut ties with the Mogadishu-based Federal Government came after urgent meeting by Puntland's cabinet of ministers in Thursday.
