Somalia: Government and Foreign Firms Discuss Oil Exploration

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud who is at the moment in the United States while attending the US-Africa Leaders Summit said there are hopes that his government may continue discussions with foreign oil companies so that they may do further oil explorations in Somalia.

The president said some of these firms will start their exploration work within the course of this week. He also pointed out that government troops took over many areas from Alshabaab and can provide the necessary security measures. "The government troops may start operations in Alshabaab controlled areas at the end of this year". President Hassan told Bloomberg News. The firms in question include Royal Dutch Shell of the Netherlands and Exxon Mobile Corp of the United States.
