Nigeria: Osun Polls and Desperation for Power

The increasing need for free, fair and credible elections will be put to the litmus test yet again, in the State of Osun come next Saturday, August 9, 2014. With the recent gubernatorial polls in Ekiti state, generally adjudged as a great improvement over the one held in Anambra State last year, expectations are high that the collective wishes of the people of the Living Spring would be upheld, this time round. But there are many factors at play, which may make or mar the outcome of the election.

Firstly, the battle will be mainly between the two most prominent political gladiators-the All Progressives Congress, APC with the incumbent governor, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola on one hand pitched against the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP with a candidate in the person of Senator Iyiola Omisore. Having lost Ekiti State after failing to clinch Ondo state in 2013, the political fortunes of the APC in the South-West geo-political zone is on a downward slide. It cannot therefore, afford to lose Osun.
