Gambia: Ministries Put Joint Efforts to Tackle Environmental Challenge in Tanji

The Ministries of the Environment, Fisheries, and Lands and Regional Government, Wednesday convened a consultative meeting in Tanji, West Coast Region, to tackle the environmental challenge the coastal community has been grabbling with at its fish-landing site.

The situation at the site was described as a 'serious environmental concern' that can potentially pose threat to the health and wellbeing of the fishmongers and the general population at large. The meeting was prompted after authorities discovered what was described as "an eyesore" during a recent tour to the site by the Environment minister, Pa Ousman Jarju. During his visit, it was observed that waste generated from the activities of fishing and other commercial activities at the site were not managed, hence creating hazards. In a brief meeting with community elders and other stakeholders, Minister Jarju expressed his disappointment over what he saw during his previous visits to the site, pointing out that something must be done. He indicated that since no one entity could undertake all these daunting challenges, his ministry has involved sister ministries to have the problem addressed.
