Kenya: Coast Health Workers Issue Strike Notice

HEALTH workers at the Coast have issued a seven-day strike notice over delay of their salaries and lack of basic hospital supplies. This comes as a strike by more than 30 interns at the Coast General Hospital enters its second week.

Members of the National Nurses Association of Kenya and the Kenya Health Professionals Union on Monday announced that they will down their tools if they are not paid their July salaries.

"Kenyans are dying...Services have ground to a halt," NNAK president Jeremiah Mainah said. He said CGH is short of 300 nurses after more than 100 resigned over "frustration by the government".

County director of health Khadija Shikelly said health workers' salaries have been delayed countrywide. She said the delays are due to challenges facing the devolution of the health sector.
