Kenya: Controller of Budget Agnes Odhiambo Risks 'Punishment' Over Funds

CONTROLLER of Budget Agnes Odhiambo may be in trouble for failing to release county funds. The Makueni government has taken her to court for allegedly disobeying an order to release 50 per cent of the county's budgetary allocation.

Odhiambo was directed to give the money on July 25. Makueni's lawyer, Tom Ojienda told High Court judge Mumbi Ngugi that the county's operations have been stalled for lack of funds.

He said Odhiambo has refused to release the money despite being aware of the court order. Ojienda said her "willful disobedience" is frustrating the people of Makueni.

"This court needs to give directions that will ensure that its orders of July 21 and August 1 are complied with," he said. Makueni MCAs have moved to court to block the reduction of their budget expenditure.

The assemblies are opposed to the budget caps imposed by the Commission on Revenue Allocation chairman Micah Cheserem. The CRA has recommended cuts on allowances, salaries, gratuity and mileage.
