Kenya: Elephants May Be Wiped Out By 2024, New Study Shows

Elephants could become extinct if illegal wildlife trade, which has reached alarming levels is not checked, a new report has warned. The study, published in yesterday's issue of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, led by George Wittemyer of Colorado State University, says new elephants births are not keeping pace with the killings.

Kenya has been identified as one of the leading transit routes for smuggling ivory out of Africa, with several incidents of ivory seizures and recovery of wildlife carcasses in recent days.
