AIRTEL Tanzania launched its communication tower at Sigunga Village in Uvinza District, Kigoma Region yesterday to extend its coverage in the upcountry areas of Western Tanzania.
According to officials of the mobile phone company, the launch of the tower is a continuation of Airtel's efforts to develop communication services in various areas of the country particularly rural areas.
Speaking at the launching event, Airtel's Lake Zone Sales Manager, Raphael Daudi, said they had identified the hassle caused by lack of telephone communication at Sigunga and neighbouring areas for a long time and decided to help out.
"We have taken the responsibility to facilitate communication services for the benefit of the people of Sigunga village and enable them to engage in their daily activities with more efficiency," he said.
"Through this communication tower, we can connect Sigunga residents to the world, enable them to easily obtain markets for their businesses and give them access to financial service through Airtel Money service, send and receive money from family and friends.
Moreover, they can make payments for business and household requirements at their home comfort," he added. The Uvinza District Commissioner Khadija Nyembo thanked Airtel for extending telecommunication services in Sigunga Village saying they had witnessed significant improvements in the social services through telecommunication services.
"Now security for residents and their assets has being improved, economic activities will be performed effectively, farmers will now be able to market their products, receive information, sell their products and receive payments through their cellular phones," she said.
"I call upon Sigunga residents and neighbouring villages to use these services for the growth of their economies and the society as a whole."
Speaking at different periods, Sigunga residents said lack of communication has been a big problem before the introduction of the facilities.
