Cote d'Ivoire: Using Photo Therapy to Exorcise Violence in Ivory Coast

Abdijan — In Ivory Coast, with presidential elections coming up next year, violence threatens to re-emerge. In order to avoid violence like that of the 2011 post-election crisis ever happening again, Ivorian photographer Barnus Sevi Gbekide is showing the photos he took during that period all around the country. "The pictures could have come straight out of horror movies, but we were the ones who did this!" exclaimed a visitor at one of the photo exhibitions.

Barnus Sevi Gbekide is a skilled photographer with 27 years of experience. Like they say in Abidjan, the economic capital of Ivory Coast, he's a 'vieux de la vieille', a real old-timer. Barnus is a role model for many young photographers. At the height of the Ivorian crisis he was in the front lines, armed with only his camera and lenses.
