Cameroon Leave Out Eto'o for Afcon Qualifiers

Captain Samuel Eto'o was a notable absentee in coach Volker Finke's 28-man squad for next month's Orange Africa Cup of Nations - Morocco 2015 qualifiers.

The 33-year old, who is unattached, was overlooked by the German trainer, who named a relatively young squad for the Group D double-header against DR Congo and Cote d'Ivoire on 6 September and four days later in Lubumbashi and Yaounde. Sierra Leone is the other team in the group.

Amongst the casualties are goalkeeper Charles Itandje, defender Benoit Assou-Ekotto, midfielder Jean II Makoun and forward Achilles Webo.

Finke has handed surprise call-ups to Barcelona trio, Fabrice Ondoua, Franck Bangnack and Jean Marie Dongou as well as Clinton Njie of French side, Olympique Lyon. Five others have also been named on the stand-by list.

According to the Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT), the Indomitable Lions are expected to begin camping on Monday, 1 September 2014 at the CAF Centre of Excellence in Mbankomo, on the outskirts of Yaounde.

Cameroon, four-time African champions have failed to qualify for the last editions of the continental showpiece event in 2012 and 2013.
