Africa: Italian Navy Rescue Hundreds of Illegal Immigrants

The Italian navy said they rescued 470 illegal immigrants who were on board a boat which was packed with them.

The Italian media reported that the rescued immigrants were taken and sheltered at Port Ambaydakol in Sishiliya Island. In another similar incident an Italian naval ship rescued another 300 illegal immigrants on a boat near Malta. Also, the Italian navy rescued 203 immigrants from Lebanon and Syria. There were many incidents where Italian navy recently rescued immigrants. However, this comes at a time when a boat carrying Somali immigrants capsized and the whereabouts of 170 of them is not known.

Rescue teams only managed to rescue 16 of the immigrants who were on that capsized boat.
