A proposal by the Elgeyo Marakwet government to tax foreign athletes who train in the high altitude county is not a good idea. Athletes in search of high altitude training are sports tourists that spend money in the Elgeyo Marakwet economy.
Does it follow that the more than a million tourists who come to Kenya should also be taxed for the sake of taxation? The altitude-training athletes bring many non-monetary benefits to Kenya, including publicity.
