A fierce fighting broke out in Lower Shabelle this morning between the forces of the federal government backed by AMISOM and Alshabaab.
Areas affected by the fighting this morning include Shalambood and Bulamareer. Units from AMISOM and the government troops are said to be moving towards Shalambood and Bulamareer towns using the coastline and the Kismayo-Mogadishu Highway. This is part of an operation by AMISOM and the government dubbed as Operation Indian Ocean in which the government wants to dislodge Alshabaab from strategic towns such as Barawe and Bulamareer.
There was heavy shelling in the wee hours of the morning creating heavy displacement of people in the areas affected by the clashes. Many civilians are being reported to be fleeing the area for safety. Sources told Dalsan Radio that the troops and AMISOM stopped over at Libsona Libya Farm on the outskirts of Bulamareer after facing fierce resistance.
