Nigeria: Are Civil Defence Operatives Really Civil?

Since operatives of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) were permitted to carry arms and ammunition a few years back, public outcry over their knack for violence and brutality against the people has intensified. Weekly Trust looks at the trend in the light of some recent cases and the way out for victims.

To many Nigerians alleged extra-judicial killings, unlawful torture, brutality and other uncivilised acts perpetrated by law enforcement agents against the people were only peculiar to men and officers of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) and lately, the military. But what has confounded many is the steady indulgence and seeming consolidation of such acts by officers of the NSCDC.
