Nigeria: Engaging Journalists for Better Election Coverage

Ibadan — For two days last week, journalists numbering 30 from both the print and electronic media were 'camped' for a workshop in the highly serene environment of one of the leading players in the hospitality industry in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, Kakanfo Inn, to brainstorm on election coverage, using the previous Ekiti State governorship election as a case study.

Though, the recently governorship election of the State of Osun was then a few days away, there was a peep into it while there was also attention on visuals. The workshop, with the theme, "Towards Impactful Election Reporting" organized by The Nigerian Press Council (NPC), in conjunction with Diamond Awards for Media Excellence (DAME), was broken into three distinct sessions handled by highly professional experts. The sessions were, 'Anatomy of an Election: Did the Press Goof on Ekiti Governorship Election'? This was followed by 'Beyond Osun: The Media and Election Reporting' and lastly, 'Visual Assault: How the Media Encourage Electoral Violence' and the papers were presented by Dr. Bisi Olawunmi, lecturer, Department of Mass Communication, Bowen University, Iwo, Osun State, Mr. Jimi Disu, on air personality at Classic Fm 97.3.3 and Mr. Tam Fiofori, photographer and film maker respectively.
