Ethiopia: Quality Issues Getting Under Their Skin

Ashenafi Yimer was patiently enquiring whether anyone was interested in buying his skins when suddenly Hassan Mude came by the road loudly calling for people who had skins to sell. Ashenafi had slaughtered one goat for the New Year; he had also bought an ox together with five neighbours around his house in Shiro Meda, which they had slaughtered at 3am on New Year's day morning.

Hassan bought the goat skin for 17 Br and the ox skin for 40 Br, paying for both on the lower side of their market value. People who slaughter animals in their houses were selling goat skins for 17 to 20Br, sheep skin for 55 to 60Br and ox skin for three to four Birr a kilo.
