Nigeria: NAFDAC Reads Riot Act to Sachet Water Producers

21 September 2014

Lagos, Nigeria — The Director General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Dr. Paul Orhii, has warned members of Association of Table Water Producers (ATWAP), producers of sachet water, popularly called 'pure water' to comply with Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) or have their licences withdrawn.

Orhii, who gave the warning at the recent launch of the annual monitoring of water quality standard and compliance for water manufacturing facilities in Lagos, said the agency cannot fold its arms and watch Nigerians die of preventable diseases. He said there had been a lot of incidences of water and food borne outbreaks (e.g. cholera) in some states of the federation; hence the importance of safe drinking water for distribution and sales to consumers cannot be over-emphasised.
