Shackdwellers from Philippi East's Mangaung informal settlement cheered after they successfully faced off with the City of Cape Town's Anti-Land Invasion Unit (ALIU) on Wednesday.
In an rare, last-minute abortion of an ALIU operation, the City has deemed shacks which were apparently "put up during the night" to have been "occupied". According to activists who have mobilised against evictions in the area in recent months, this leniency is unprecedented.
