Uganda: When It Was a Crime to Photograph a Soldier's Wife

Living under Idi Amin's regime in Uganda was a precarious endeavour, with people of all walks of life under threat from his security personnel. Famous photographer Deogratius Ssebowa Kyakulagira was once a victim when he nearly lost his life for hanging a portrait of a wife of an army captain in his studio, without permission.

The captain's wife had been photographed in Kyakulagira's studio in Entebbe town, Wakiso district in the early 1970s. And because it was a good photo, Kyakulagira decided to display it in his studio - as most studios do to showcase their work.
