Liberia: Growing Food - the Progress and Challenges in Grand Bassa County

Buchanan — In 1997 William Watson graduated from the LOIC with a certificate in building trades and agriculture and since then he has preferred growing vegetables of all kinds to source livelihood for his family instead of seeking employment from any of the several multi million dollar companies operating in Grand Bassa County.

Watson joined a USAID sponsored program Food Enterprise Development (FED) in 2013 and claims that the program has helped him and 22 other vegetable farmers in Grand Bassa value what they grow. Like Watson, who has his farm in Hardlandville, some 5 miles away from the port city of Buchanan, the 22 other farmers have their individual farms in the Tubmanville and New Buchanan areas. They too say farming has changed their lives and can do same for many rural Liberians if government employs a more effective policy to achieve food security.
