The first person diagnosed with Ebola on U.S. soil, Thomas Eric Duncan, has died, according to CNN.

Duncan died on Wednesday at the Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Texas, where he was receiving treatment after arriving from his native Liberia.

Hospital officials had earlier reported that he was given an experimental drug which treats a broad spectrum of viral diseases and was reported to have shown promise against Ebola.

The current Ebola outbreak, which began in Guinea, has killed more than 3,800 people after spreading to Guinea's neighbours. Liberia and Sierra Leone are the two hardest-hit nations, where thousands are now infected.

The World Health Organization reported on Wednesday that the total number of confirmed, probable, and suspected cases reported up to October 5 was 8,033, with 3,879 deaths.
