The leader of the women's wing of the Chama Cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo (CHADEMA) opposition party Halima Mdee and eight other members were charged in a magistrate's court in Dar es Salaam on Tuesday (October 7th) with unlawful assembly and disobedience, Tanzania's Daily News reported.
Mdee and eight other politicians affiliated with the women's wing of CHADEMA, known as BAWACHA, were arrested Saturday for assembling near the State House after their application for a permit to protest was denied by police. They gathered to urge President Jakaya Kikwete not to sign the recently approved draft constitution.
