Nigeria: Applause As Light, Camera, Africa!!! Film Festival Ends in Lagos

10 October 2014

THE 4th edition of the annual Light, Camera, Africa!!! film festival closed on Wednesday, October 1 in Lagos. It opened on September 26 and held for six days on the grounds of Federal Palace Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos. With support from Union Bank Plc and held in partnership with a number of organizations, the festival featured screening of top rate films curated from within and outside the continent. On the bill this year were films like Fantastic Man, Living Funeral, B for Boy, The Supreme Price and Kunle Afolayan's October 1.

There was a film market and several conversations as well as questions and answer sessions that were held during the well-attended festival. Afoloyan's jubilee hit October 1 was the closing film of the festival and it played to a full house. Another significant film that featured during the festival was The Supreme Price, a documentary by U.S. filmmaker, photographer and lecturer, Joanna Lipper. The film tells the story of late Chief M.K.O Abiola who is believed to have won the June 12, 1993 Presidential election. The story, also about Abiolai's wife Kudirat who died in the struggle for the actualization of June 12, was explored through the eyes of Hafsat Abiola. Lipper said she decided to work on the documentary because the Abiola family's story connects inextricably to Nigeria's ongoing struggle for true democracy, transparent and accountable governance and protection of human rights. The documentary was widely described as well made and a significant documentary that should widely shown.
