Uganda: Torture Victim Sues Govt for Sh58 Million

A former non-governmental organisation employee has sued the government, claiming he was tortured by agents of the Violent Crime Crack Unit (VCCU).

In a suit filed at the High court, Michael Ochan claims that on August 17, 2006, his home in Mbuya was raided by people who identified themselves as police officers from VCCU. VCCU has since morphed into the Special Investigations Unit, based in Kireka. Ochan said the police officers accused him of having been involved in an armed robbery at Sixth street, Industrial area [Kampla].
