Kenya: Developers Evict Kaya Elders From Sacred Forests

For decades, Kaya forests at the Kenyan coast have remained the source of ritual power and cultural identity for the Mijikenda people.

The revered forests consist of more than 45 separate forests sites along the coast, surrounding the remnants of several fortified villages of the nine ethnic groups that form Mijikenda - the Digo, Chonyi, Kambe, Duruma, Kauma, Ribe, Rabai, Jibana, and Giriama.
