Nigeria: 'Nigeria Is Free of Type 3 Polio Virus'

Nigeria has not reported any case of Wild Polio Virus type 3 (WPV3) in the past 24 months and WPV1 in the last month and is set to stop the transmission of the virus by end of December 2014.

Executive Director, National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), Dr. Ado Gana Mohammed, told The Guardian in an exclusive interview yesterday as part activities to mark the 2014 World Polio Week how the polio infrastructure was effectively used to contain the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD). Mohammed also assured Nigerians that the electioneering ahead of the 2015 polls will not lead to the resurgence of the virus as witnessed in 2007 and 2011, and efforts made by the Agency to ensure that children in security challenged states especially those in Borno and Yoba are reached with the Oral Polio Vaccine (OPV).
