Sierra Leoneans march for hope, not helplessness

Pretoria — Ebola has claimed nearly 5000 lives across West Africa, with Sierra Leone being one of the worst-hit countries. VSO has 50 years of experience working in the country and our Sierra Leone team is part of the Ebola task force committee at the Ministry of Health and Sanitation. They are working together on community mobilization and support for health care workers, as well as towards minimising the long-term impact of the disease on the health system. However, efforts are not contained within the countries affected most heavily. Here, Kaday Mansaray Sibanda, VSO South Africa Regional Director recounts a defiant march representative of the way that active citizens across borders are are trying to show their support for the communities affected by Ebola.

On the morning of October 17 2014, I joined 70 fellow Sierra Leoneans and friends on the green lawn outside of the Pretoria Art Museum for an unforgettable moment of true active citizenship.
