Nigeria: Firm Trains Kaduna Farmers in Maize Production

The Programme Manager of Syngenta Nigeria Limited, Iruansi Itoandon, has disclosed that about 15,000 farmers, who cultivate maize and selected from seven local government areas of Kaduna State, have been trained in the modern maize farming to boost food production in the country and to increase their income.

Iruansi Itoandon, who disclosed this during the maize farmers' field day in Ikara town, Kaduna, said the training, which started six month ago, has been yielding desired results as trained farmers now smile to the bank because of bounty harvest they now get. According to Itoandon, the training covered areas such as land selections, where farmers are taught on land topography, soil texture and vegetable composition, use of herbicides, among others. He said, "We are at Ikara, which is one of the champion locations where corn and sorghum are being cultivated in large quantity. Ikara is like a default location for us to find the farmers, to showcase what we have been doing with them for the past six months that we have been working together, teaching them how to support better productivity for maize in Kaduna State
