Sudan Supports GERD for Economic Benefits Not Political Reasons

Sudan's Ambassador to Ethiopia, Ambassador Abdel Rahman Sir-el-katim, said on Monday (November 24) that Sudan remains committed to support the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) "because we believe that this dam will benefit Sudan together with Ethiopia and Egypt." The Ambassador said: "We will benefit initially in two ways. One is in the provision of electrical power, and secondly for help in agriculture projects."

He added that the Sudan did not support GERD "for political reason." Ambassador Sir-el-katim also welcomed the resumption of the Tripartite Dam Talks between Ethiopia, Sudan and Egypt over the construction of the dam. He said the positive progress made in these talks would create key enabling conditions for the successful completion of the Dam. Ambassador Sir-el-katim noted that with US$2.5 billion aggregate capital, Sudanese business persons and investors had a significant input into Ethiopia's key investment and trade areas, including agriculture, industry, infrastructure and tourism.
