South Africa: Local Government Must Be About Serving the People - Minister Gordhan

The Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Mr Pravin Gordhan, appeared before the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) to give assurances about a number of interventions his department has put in place to root out lacklustre governance ethos and financial mismanagement in various municipalities across the country.

In his address to the NCOP debate titled "Towards Making Our Municipalities Work Effectively and Efficiently", the minister welcomed the occasion stating that "the occasional review of the functionality of municipalities and actions to improve their efficiency and effectiveness is essential. This will ensure that the capabilities of both political leaders and the administration to manage their responsibilities are constantly upgraded".
