South Africa: Human Rights Commission Weighs in On National Minimum Wage

The difference between the highest and lowest income earners is so vast such that estimates from 2012 show that the highest income earners make in a minute what the lowest income earners cannot make in a lifetime, a representative from the South African Human Rights Commission, Mr Paul Sulema, told the Portfolio Committee on Labour in Rustenburg in the North West.

The Committee is undertaking public hearings on the viability of the national minimum wage in the country. The Chairperson of the Committee, Ms Lumka Yengeni, had earlier reminded the public hearings that the Committee is looking for input particularly from the mineworkers.
