Nigeria: Ebre Cultural Society in Ibibio Land

28 November 2014

THE Ibibio people are regarded as one of the largest ethnic nationalities in the country. They are mostly found in the South-South geo-polity, east of River Niger in Akwa Ibom State. They were said to have migrated from 'Ibom' a place quite near Arochukwu in the present Abia State, however, the exact origin, migration and settlement is not known. From the oral tradition, Ibibio people are believed to be very intelligent, industrious and civil in dealing with issues and problems.

For instance, it is on record that Ibibio women's communal relationship contributed greatly to fostering integrity and oneness among the people. Ebre also encourages the spirit of individual development through self-discipline (nnim nno idem). It is a weekly or monthly financial contributory scheme among members. The practice enhanced women of the Ibibio kingdom especially to be morally upright as they organized themselves for worth-while development projects.
