South Africa: POPCRU Commemorates World Aids Day and Wishes COSATU a Happy Birthday

press release

The Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (POPCRU) joins millions across the globe in the united fight against HIV and Aids on this year's World Aids Day. As we remember those who lost their lives as a result of illnesses related to this pandemic, we also show our continuous support to those affected and infected by the virus.

According to figures released by Statistics South Africa in May 2013, the estimated overall HIV prevalence rate was approximately 10%. The total number of people living with HIV was estimated at approximately 5, 26 million. For adults aged 15 - 49 years, an estimated 15, 9% of the population is HIV positive. Regardless of the figures, POPCRU believes that the government of the day has worked hard to make sure that those infected are placed on Anti-Retroviral treatment. The organisation however appeals with those who are not infected by the virus to continue to do everything in their power to protect themselves.
