Nigeria: How We Overcame Funding Challenge to Build Shipyard

In the last 14 years, Starz Shipyard has been the only privately owned indigenous shipyard in Nigeria, a country with a vast maritime domain and huge vessel traffic. This, according to the chief executive officer of Starz Group, operators of the shipyard, Engr. Greg Ogbeifun, is not good enough for the country.

He said it was a big challenge establishing the shipyard which utilizes a 500 ton floating dock for its operations, commissioned in 2000. Although, the idea of a shipyard was conceptualized in 1994, it was not realized in 2000, six years after, because of funding challenge. Less than a million dollars was needed at the time.
