Gambia: Papa Gassama to Leave for AFCON January 4

Bakary Papa Gassama has been expressing his excitement to Observer Sports as he prepares to participate in his fourth straight AFCON finals in Equatorial Guinea next month. The continent's top referee is one of 42 selected by CAF to officiate the 30th Orange African Cup of Nations from January 17 to February 8.

The Gambian who took charge of games in the previous three editions held in 2010, 2012 and 2013 became the first Gambian to participate at a senior FIFA competition after he refereed at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. Gassama who also officiated at the 2013 Club World Cup in Morocco also charge of the deciding leg of the African Champions League final earlier this year. What's more extraordinary is that it was two in a row for the highly rated ref. He took charge of last year's decider between eventual winners Al Ahly from Egypt and Orlando Pirates from South Africa.
