Kenya: Motego Gets Coaching Job At Kisii County Govt

24 January 2015

KISII County Government has appointed former Harambee Stars player Henry Motego as football coach. The 48-year-old former striker will be in charge of football management and training in the culture, youth, sports and social services department. Already, Motego has started work and he is currently coaching the county football team at the Gusii Stadium. "I am grateful to Governor James Ongwae for giving me this chance to oversee the revival of soccer in Kisii. I will do my best to ensure we regain our lost glory as a county in football," said an elated Motego. Governor Ongwae said Motego has been tasked to spearhead efforts to identify and nurture talent as well as coordinate football activities at schools and club level.

"We plan to have a soccer bonanza in Kisii County, where teams from the sub-counties will face off to pick a team to represent the county. We are happy to have Motego with us," said Moiro Omari, the CEC in charge of sports, culture and social services. Motego helped Shabana gain promotion to Kenyan Premier League in 1988. After a good stint at Shabana, he was poached by Kenya Breweries FC and signed for the club in 1989. In 1991, Motego signed for Omani league side Al-Oruba SC for two seasons. Motego returned to play for Kenya Breweries until he retired in 2000. Motego made several appearances for Harambee Stars, including six Fifa World Cup qualifying matches. He played for Kenya in 1988, 1990 and 1992 African Cup of Nations finals. At Harambee Stars, he played alongside J.J Masiga, Bobby Ogolla, Ambrose Ayoyi and the late Sammy Onyango Jogoo.
