Somalia: An African Union Human Rights' Visit to Somalia

This week, Commissioner Reine Alapini-Gansou, Special Rapporteur on Human Rights Defenders in Africa for the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights (ACHPR) visited Mogadishu. During her visit Commissioner Gansou met with Ambassador Nicholas Kay and with President Mohamud and also held talks with government ministers and intergovernmental organizations.

On Tuesday (January 27), the Commissioner participated in a conference in Mogadishu organized by the East and Horn of Africa Human Rights Defenders Project. Human rights defenders from across Somalia as well as ministers, officials and the European Union Special Envoy to Somalia, Michele Cervone D'Urso, attended. Also in attendance were representatives from the UNSOM's Human Rights Unit, AMISOM and the European Union's Human Rights Working Group.
