Nigeria: Tapping the Hidden Treasure of Water Hyacinth

Achenyo Idachaba is eking out a living from an unusual source many Nigerians discard as waste. A systems analyst and former staff of ExxonMobil before relocating to Nigeria, she is repurposing water hyacinth to several other usable items like baskets, furniture, key rings, amongst others usually used as souvenirs at occasions. She spoke to Daily Trust on starting from ground zero on personal funds to passing on the knowledge to other women and riverine communities.

For many who grew up around the Niger Delta waterways, Kolo Creek is a familiar destination, being the only playground most children had to play and hone their swimming and fishing skills.
