Nigeria: FRSC and 2015 Speed Limit Enforcement

21 February 2015

Many Nigerians may not know that the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) would commence the enforcement of speed limits in the country from June 1, 2015. The speed limited on vehicles is said to be targeted at vehicles starting with commercial ones across the country, to address excessive speeding on our roads.

This directive was given by the Chief Executive of the FRSC, Boboye Oyeyemi a fortnight ago when he lamented over the rate of road traffic crashes recorded in 2014. He lamented that speed-induced road traffic crashes accounted for 50.8percent of reported road traffic crashes and that commercial vehicles accounted for 30percent of road traffic crashes and about 40percent of fatalities. The projection therefore, is that if this novel strategy succeeds, crashes will reduce by 30percent, which according to him, justifies FRSC's introduction of speed limiting devices on vehicles. It is now less than four months to the set deadline.
