East Africa: The East African Community Holds Its 16th Ordinary Summit in Nairobi

Kenya is hosting the 16th Ordinary Summit of East African Community Heads of State on Friday (February 20). The Summit in Nairobi is being attended by Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete and Rwanda's President Paul Kagame, President Pierre Nkurunziza of Burundi, and President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda as well as host, Kenya's President Uhuru Kenyatta. President Kenyatta and President Kagame on Thursday officially commissioned the 140MW Olkaria Geothermal Power Plant.

The Summit will consider the Annual Report of the EAC Council of Ministers for the period between December 2013 and November 2014. It will look at the progress report of implementation of key outstanding decisions which are important to the East African Community and review the security situation in the region. The Summit will also appoint a committee of experts drawn from the five countries to draft a constitution to guide the establishment of a political federation in the region.
