The kidnapping of the Chibok girls and the declaration of parts of the country as Caliphate, sent worries down the spines of people from all over the world, who did not hesitate to warn that the reputation of the Nigerian military was at stake and that the future of the country and its people was in jeopardy.

Nonetheless, government was applying the 'carrot and stick' approach at curbing the insurgents. It was on the basis of this that Nigerians and some former military top notch, including a former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (rtd) advised government to cut off food and fuel supplies to the insurgents to weaken their reserve and to declare total war on them.
