Ethiopia: Community Based Health Insurance - a Way Out of Poverty

"I am benefiting a lot after I registered in the Community Based Health Insurance Programme (CBHI). Even when I am broke, I could get medical services that entail hospitalization. If a sought-for drug is not available at health stations, I could buy it from another area. This way I liquidate the money in the Woreda and receive the money I spent for buying the drug. The only condition that health officials request me to fulfill is produce a membership card of the programme," so said Ayalew Guangule, 45, a resident of Woledi 01 Kebele of Chefa Woreda.

Ayalew further said, while the programme was in its initial stages, when people advised him to engage in CBHI Programme, he was a bit reluctant. But soon when he came to understand the benefits he began to show a bent to come aboard.
