Mozambique: Candlelight Vigil in Memory of Gilles Cistac

Maputo — Hundreds of people gathered on Tuesday night to pay homage to murdered constitutional lawyer Gilles Cistac at the spot where he had been gunned down by unknown assailants a few hours earlier.

The 53 year old Cistac was attacked outside the ABFC café on Eduardo Mondlane Avenue in central Maputo. As he was entering a taxi, a second car drove past containing a four member death squad. Shots from an AK-47 assault rifle rang out, and three of them hit Cistac. He was taken to Maputo Central Hospital, where he underwent a four hour operation in an attempt to remove a bullet lodged in his thorax, but the doctors proved unable to save his life.
