South Africa: Process Begins to Replace IEC Part-Time Commissioner

Pretoria — President Jacob Zuma has requested Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng to start the process of filling the vacancy that has occurred due to the resignation of Raenette Taljaard, the former part-time Commissioner of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC).

Section 6 (2) and (4) of the Electoral Commission Act (Act No 51 of 1996) calls for a panel consisting of the Chief Justice as chairperson, the Public Protector, a representative of the Commission on Gender Equality and a representative of the Human Rights Commission to recommend candidates to the committee of the National Assembly for appointment as commissioners of the IEC.
