CM: It has been 25 years since you chaired marathon meetings of the Constituent Assembly to write the Constitution and set up government. Now you are taking over as President. How has the path been for the country over the years in terms of governance?

HG: Thank you for the questions posed to me as part of the 25th independence anniversary coverage of The Namibian newspaper. To provide you with a contextualised perspective, allow me to ground my answers with a brief background of our independence. As Namibians, we are all aware that our independence was achieved after a long and bitter struggle against the injustices of colonial apartheid. This manifested in the denial of human and political rights and freedoms, and economic exclusion of the majority of the Namibian population. As the incoming national government, we were faced then with an irrational situation, inheriting a country which was administratively, politically and psychologically divided along racial and ethnic lines.
