Namibia: 2 500 Cases of Rabies Recorded in Five Years

According to figures given by the minister of agriculture John Mutorwa at the launch of the National Rabies Control Strategy in Windhoek recently, about 2 595 cases of rabies were reported in the last five years, with at least 18 people dying of the disease each year.

Mutorwa said this was caused by insufficient cold chain facilities and equipment for storing the anti-rabies vaccines because the legislation for rabies control was outdated and/or inadequate. He said there is an urgent need to improve the current intervention in the control of rabies in rural areas where there are no proper facilities to deal with the disease.
