Kenya: Why Gay Rights Would Make Economic Sense

The MP for Gatundu South has been taken to court for allegedly posting content on his Facebook page referring to Bible verse Genesis 17:14. This verse refers to the Jewish cultural practice of circumcision. Taken in the Kenyan context, the Director for Public Prosecutions argues the Bible verse must have been in reference to non-circumcision culture of certain communities. Because a majority of Kenyan communities practice male circumcision, it is easy to see why one would imagine that such a practice is a conventional practice globally.

Yet as the saying goes "Utaumagaraga oigaga no nyina urugaga cii murio" meaning that one who has not travelled widely thinks that only his mother makes the best meals. In the context of culture if one is not widely exposed one might be tempted to think that one's cultural practices are the norm. With regards to circumcision, someone from Kenya may think it's the conventional practice for all men even though it's only practiced by less than 30% of adult males globally (Source - World Health Organization).
