South Africa: Nal'ibali Reading-for-Enjoyment Campaign Extends to Sepedi

The Nal'ibali reading-for-enjoyment campaign has launched its English-Sepedi version. Produced by the Project for the Study of Alternative Education in South Africa (PRAESA), in partnership with Times Media, the Nal'ibali newspaper supplements already appear in combinations of English-isiXhosa, English-Sesotho, English-Afrikaans and English-isiZulu, as part of the campaign's mission to give children and their caregivers access to good quality stories in their home languages.

"Being read to in your own language should not be considered a nice optional extra for children. It is an essential and powerful part of language learning and developing literacy. When you read regularly to children in their home languages, you give them a strong language foundation that makes not just reading, but all learning easier," explains Carole Bloch, Director of PRAESA, which is driving the Nal'ibali campaign.
