Liberia: Thwarting Measles, Polio - Bomi County to Vaccinate 16,207 Children

Tubmanburg — Ebola may have retreated from Liberia but a new outbreak is emerging with the Measles sickness affecting over Eight Counties in the country. At a vaccine campaign in Tubmanburg, Bomi County Saturday, health workers pleaded with mothers to bring their children to be vaccinated. "This is not an Ebola vaccine and it will not kill your child, so baby ma and baby pa please bring your children for the measles vaccine," a health-worker could be heard admonishing health-workers. The Health workers who carried banners with inscription 'Integrated Measles, Polio and de-worming campaign, wore yellow and white T-shirts, as they danced under traditional drum sound.

Dr. G. Gorbee Logan, County Health Officer, Bomi County sought to allay fears from mothers afraid to bring their children forward to be vaccinated. "People are thinking that this measles vaccine is an Ebola vaccine and a vaccine to make one pregnant, but that is not so. This vaccine is for measles polio and Deworming. We want to make sure that our children under five years are vaccinated during this epidemic. And the Country's target is to vaccinate over 683,000 children between the periods of May 8th to May 14. 2015."
