Africa: Violence Against Women and Girls 'Shames Every Society,' UN Anti-Crime Chief Warns

Voicing concern over the continued killing of women and girls, the United Nations anti-crime chief today issued a strong call to end such acts, as well as to unravel the gender at the heart of the "dreadful daily experiences of violence" that blight so many of their lives.

"Violence against women and girls, in all its many forms, shames us all," Yury Fedotov, Executive Director of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), said in a statement issued in Vienna today during the 24th Session of the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice, which opened yesterday and runs through 21 May.
